Safety chucks, better known as klapplager are used for support of (expanding) shafts on which a product needs to be un- or rewinded. The construction of the safety chucks allows easy opening and closure, after which f.i. changing a roll or shaft can take place. Primary industries for the safety chucks are paperindustry, plasticindustry en printingindustry. Safety chucks may be found on machines for converting, coating or lamination.

There are many standard types of safety chucks, with or without replaceable inserts (VT) manual or pneumatically operated. With or without shaft-end. There are versions equipped with brakes or clutch, either manually or pneumatically. Sliding chucks for 50 upto 100 mm. axial adjustment.
